Two sport athlete Cassie Smatana is well-known on the Colby Community College campus. The 5’8” volleyball player and women’s track team member is one of the most involved students on campus. A native of Albuquerque, New Mexico, she started for the Trojan volleyball squad and participates in throwing events for the track and field team. In addition to her athletic endeavors, Smatana is a Student Ambassador and is a resident assistant at the Northeast Dormitory. “I don’t have much free time,” said Smatana. “However, I am also participating in the college Chess Club and have been skiing several times with the Ski Club. ”Smatana is also enrolled in 24 hours this semester with plans to graduate in May ad transfer to a four-year school.“I haven’t decided yet where to go next year,” Smatana said. “I’m looking at a school in Massachusetts. I definitely know I want to play volleyball at the next level. I hope to major in education or forestry.” A graduate of El Dorado High School in Albuquerque, Smatana played club volleyball in high school. “I was recruited to attend CCC when I played at a tournament in Denver,” said Smatana. “I didn’t even know where Colby was. I’m so glad I came. The people are really nice and it’s been an awesome two years.” “Cassie is a great example of the quality students we have at CCC,” said President Lynn Kreider. “With a huge smile on her face, she is a real asset to the campus as a student, athlete, and ambassador for the college.” |
